Chapter 9
Jake was awakened Saturday morning by a phone call from Paul.
“He didn’t come home,” were the first words out of Paul’s mouth. “Find him, Jake. Please find him.”
“I can try,” Jake replied. “Honestly, though, you should call Detective Ogden. He’s working on the Alan Sutton case. Tell him what’s going on and why you’re worried. He’s got the resources to start looking for Todd that I don’t.”
“You know he’ll tell me I’m overreacting, but I’m not, Jake. I’m not. Todd’s never done anything like this. Never.”
“I know. I think the detective will believe you. After all, this has at least some of the earmarks of the Sutton case, with Paul disappearing from work.”
“He wasn’t at work. I tried calling him around four-thirty, to see if he wanted us to skip dinner out, since he’d be late. He didn’t answer so I called his secretary, figuring his client had arrived early, to give him my message about dinner. She said he’d already left to meet the client at the man’s office.” Paul sucked in a distraught breath. “There wasn’t any office, was there?”
“My guess would be there was, but it wasn’t a real one. Did you ask her where it was, or if she had the contact information for the client?”
“No. Why would I?”
“No reason,” Jake admitted. “Paul, I want you to call the detective. If he’s not there, leave a message that it’s imperative he call you as soon as possible. That it has to do with the Sutton case.”
“I will. Jake, will you do whatever you can, too?”
“Yes,” Jake promised, although he didn’t know what that would be. It was the weekend. He couldn’t talk to anyone at Todd’s office until Monday, as he’d pointed out to Russ the previous night.
“Thank you! I’ll call…Detective Ogden, you said?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll call him right now.” With that, Paul ended the call.
Jake got up, dressed for the day in jeans and a T-shirt, and went to make something to eat before doing his Saturday chores.
He was in the middle of stripping his bed to put the sheets with the rest of his laundry to take to the Laundromat when his phone dinged. A glance at the caller ID let him know it was Ogden.
“It looks like we might have another one,” Ogden said when Jake answered. “I just spoke with your friend, Paul Ireland, about his missing boyfriend. To be honest, if it weren’t for the similarities with the Sutton case I’d have brushed him off. I’m not Missing Persons.”
“I suspect you want me to keep my nose out of this, too,” Jake replied, figuring that’s why Ogden had called.
Instead of answering his question, Ogden said, “How well do you know Ireland and Wilson?”
“We’ve been friends for a while and I see them at least once a week. Why?”
“Did either of them say anything about being followed?”
“No, but Fabian did try to hit on Paul at Donovan’s a few weeks ago. That’s why I was able; well, my artist was able to put together the picture of him after I took them to meet her.
